Protection of Harvard’s Data and Information

All Harvard faculty, staff, and students are responsible for the protection of the University’s information and data assets that pertain to their work. Users of Harvard’s Cloud Services must

  1. Be knowledgeable of the University’s Information Security Policies
  2. Be knowledgeable of the University’s data classification categories and protection requirements
  3. Understand the security requirements that apply to the data and information for which they are custodian
  4. Ensure that their use of Harvard’s Cloud Services, and all computing environments, provides appropriate protection for the data and information for which they are responsible

Data Classifications and the Use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Harvard

HUIT’s Cloud & DevOps program, working in close collaboration with the Harvard Information Security team, is developing a set of guidelines, templates, and tools for use of the Amazon Web Services with the various Harvard Data Classifications. Appropriate Use Statement

All Harvard cloud users must acknowledge that they will follow the Appropriate Use Guidelines for cloud services. This statement is intended to ensure that use of Amazon Web Services or other cloud services is appropriate for specific areas and applications, and that users understand their responsibilities to protect Harvard’s information and data assets prior to placing them in the cloud.

All Harvard cloud users are responsible for their usage charges and financial management of their accounts and are encouraged to monitor their bills to avoid surprises.
